BLOG: The Melancholy Of A Broke Otaku…

I know that just about everyone and their brother/sister have been affected by the downward spiral of the U.S. economy in the past few years but today was almost my tipping point. I had been looking forward to going to two conventions this weekend for months now but alas because of my depleted checking account I could not afford to go to either one. The first convention I missed out on was Sugoicon in Cincinnati, Ohio. An all round japanophile event with all the sights and goodies one would expect to find at a Japanese pop culture event. Anime, Manga, Cosplay and random acts of glomping… You know the good stuff!

The other event I was looking forward to Mid-Ohio Con, a comic book convention held in Columbus, Ohio. Like most of my friends I grew up on reading comic books/graphic novels and I was looking to try and complete some of my collections that I have held onto for over fifteen years or better and try to snag some autographs of the comic book artist/writers as well. Comic books where my first love and what lead me into reading manga later on in my life. Artist like Jim Lee and Joe Madureira whose art work draws heavily from Japanese manga and Korean manwa (Lee is a Korean born illustrator) peaked my interest in the art style from the east.

I lay in bed last night doing mathematics and crunching numbers trying to find a way for me to get to both of these events in a single weekend with a limited budget; needless to say it was impossible… I could not get any rest what so ever and when I finally crashed it was well into the sun light hours. Ugh the feeling of not being able to do things that you love doing is a terrible thing. I have been battling depression all day long into the wee hours of Sunday morning. But I digress so I decided to have me a little pick me up and hit the good ole trusty eBay and try to make my blues go away and I’m glad I did!

So I went on a mini comic book/manga buying spree and picked up some things I have been wanting for years and a few things I needed to continue my collections. Buying things on eBay may not have been the weekend I was so longing after but it has culled my depression somewhat and has added to my ever increasing collection of manga/comics! And the great thing about all of the items I bought is that they cost less than it would have to get into both conventions and no gas was used in the process! I do wish I could have seen all the fantastic Cosplay and artist alleys which are two of my favorite things at any convention. But the great thing about the internet is pictures will be uploaded of the cosplayers and I can always find great art work being sold somewhere.

So my next blog will most likely be a review about the Asuka Langley Shikinami Plug Suit Test Type by Kotobukiya that I ordered recently. And also will be doing a review of an anime series that I recently started watching called The World God Only Knows “Kami nomi zo Shiru Sekai“. So please feel free to shoot me an email to recommend some thing for me to watch or review, I will be looking forward to hearing from you! And thank you for taking the time out of your day to read the ramblings of this crazed otaku! And now I leave you with a bit of humor, the picture of the week…
