Highschool of the Dead

Directed by: Tetsuro Araki

Studio: Madhouse

Genre: Horror, Drama, Suspense

Episodes: 12

Synopsis:

Highschool of the Dead is set in the present day, beginning as the world is struck by a deadly pandemic that turns humans into zombies, euphemistically referred to by the main characters as "Them". The story follows a group of high school students, the high school's nurse, and a young girl as they fight their way to safety through the deadly streets of Japan during a worldwide catastrophic event known as the "Outbreak". As the cast tries to survive the zombie apocalypse, they must also face the additional threats of societal collapse, in the form of dangerous fellow survivors, and the possible decay of their own moral codes.

Review:

In the beginning I had some mixed feelings about watching this anime mainly from what I had seen from various AMV’s and Google images. I am not a big fan of “fan service” or “pantsu” so I went into this fully expecting to hate it from the get go but also being a fan of zombie films/shows I had some hope that I may enjoy it. And did I ever enjoy it! Hiding under the gratuitous panty shots and ridiculous breast physics is a brilliant story. One of the best zombie story lines I have ever seen actually, the writer Yƍsuke Kuroda had to have done his homework on this one. There were plenty of things he could have left out but it seemed like he hit everything with pin point accuracy. It was a breath of fresh air in a somewhat dead (pun intended) genre. The animation flows nicely in the action scenes and the zombies themselves look scary, something that live action films cannot always pull off. The character development is very good for only having twelve episodes to tell a story. Yeah there is some fluff mixed in and a little love triangle but nothing that screams out at you. This anime has firmly been placed in my top five zombie movies/shows alongside the likes of The Walking Dead and The Zombie Diaries. If you haven’t seen either of those go to Best Buy right now and buy them you will not be disappointed! I give Highschool of the Dead…

four out of five stars
If you can get past the, at some times ridiculous fan service and see what this anime is at its heart you will love it. The fan service keeps alone keeps this anime from getting five out of five. Zombie/Horror fans will absolutely love this anime. I highly recommend this!

Nice review - as a newbie in the Anime genre and a life long horror fan, this series mergers the two genres very well
