Meet Shinji Ikari, a 15 year old boy who has been friends with Asuka Soryu since childhood. Life is somewhat easy going these days in Tokyo-3 and a peace has come over the land. Shinji enjoys a relatively normal school life besides the time he has to spend at NERV HQ doing test for the Evangelion’s. Along comes Rei Ayanami a distant relative of Shinji’s mother Yui. Now with Rei in the picture Asuka has a rival for Shinji’s attention and cause her to think of Shinji as more than just a friend. Now with a love triangle starting to form between Asuka, Rei and Shinji, his semi peaceful days are over and now a battle for his love and affection is under way!

So yeah, this EVA world is pretty much not what fans of the original TV series would consider canon. It’s loosely based off of one of the final episodes of the show where Shinji was envisioning a different future. So if you’re looking for more of the mind bending WTF that the TV show gave us this manga is not for you. Now having said that, this manga does a pretty good job of holding its own. This is an EVA love story, yep a love story and not a bad story at all. There hasn’t been an angel attack yet, you see none of the EVA units and NERV is only used basically as a test facility.

The story is decent and at times brilliant but for the most part it is average at best. The art work is good and the characters are well drawn, they all look the way they should. All of the characters return for this manga along with Yui Ikari who only had limited face time in the anime. Gendo is not a Jerk but an overly affectionate carefree person to the point of being comical. Shinji is not annoying, Asuka is still bossy and Rei comes out of her shell some. All and all this is a good manga not great but good. If you’re a fan of comedy and romance you will enjoy this. If you’re a fan of EVA and just want more no matter what it is you will also enjoy this but like I said before if you want the WTF EVA this is not for you. Otakustew.net gives Neon Genesis Evangelion: Shinji Ikari Raising Project a…
Three out of Five Stars..
I personally love this manga! It makes me laugh, makes me sad and makes me happy! But It’s honestly just average. The story feels kind of recycled from other manga at times. I will keep buying each issue as they come out because I do enjoy it. I’m a sucker for romantic comedy in any form so this is right up my alley so if you like romance and comedy you should pick this up I think you will enjoy it as much as me!
