REVIEW: Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica

Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica

Directed by: Akiyuki Shinbo

Studio: Shaft

Genre: Drama, Magical Girl, Science Fantasy

Episodes: 12

Madoka Kaname is a young girl from a loving family. One day she meets Kyubey, a small white creature who is known as a familiar/incubator. Kyubey has the ability to grant Madoka any wish she desires but in exchange for that wish she must become a Puella Magi (Magical Girl) and live a life fighting against witches.

So I had heard a lot of hype about this anime on the internet long before I ever sat down to watch it. Things like “Greatest anime ever” “It will change your life” and what not. Being a fan of magic style anime I was very interested in watching Madoka Magica. So I finally finished it the other night and while it is a very solid anime I would refrain from calling it the greatest anime ever.

The animation is very well done, the way the witches are presented is really unique and a nice change of pace from other anime. The action is well paced and doesn’t feel busy or hurried. The transformation sequences are not drawn out and don’t take ten seconds like other magical girl anime which doesn’t take away from time of the shows. The only problem I had with the art work was Madoka’s head was like a block and the lines in the characters eye. Only small complaints by me and in no way take away from how nice it looks.

The story is sold and shocking at times! I was very surprised at the level of violence in this series. There is nice character development for a twelve episode series. But the story is not new to some of us. It’s compelling and interesting but there are many parts I’ve seen in other anime before. All and all it’s a good series but it didn’t change my life or blow my mind like some people had suggested it would. These are just my opinions and take them for what they are nothing more. So Otakustew.net gives Mahō Shōjo Madoka Magika…
Three out of Five stars...

It’s a good series but I guess from all the hype I had read and seen I was hoping for something that would blow my mind. I enjoyed it a lot and I think most everyone who watches it will enjoy it as well. So when you get the chance go see it or wait until Aniplex puts out the English DVD’s.
